JAKARTA The majority of the public considers that the issue of President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) diploma is a political maneuver from those who are his political rivals.

This conclusion was conveyed by the Center for Indonesia Strategic Actions (CISA) based on the results of a national survey released on Wednesday, May 21.

CISA Executive Director, Herry Mendrova, said that the dominant public perception showed a tendency to see the issue of this fake diploma as part of a political strategy that was deliberately played for certain purposes.

A total of 89.87 percent of respondents considered that this issue was very likely to be deliberately spread or played for certain political interests, which could come from Jokowi's political opponents, "said Herry when releasing the results of a survey entitled "Public View of the Issue of Pak Jokowi's Fake Certificate" in Jakarta.

Furthermore, this survey also shows the level of public trust in the clarification that has been submitted by Jokowi and Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), his alma mater.

"As many as 51.35 percent of respondents said they really believed, and 25.35 percent quite trusted the clarification given by President Jokowi. Meanwhile, the clarification from UGM, 47.35 percent said they really believed it, and 25.76 percent believed it enough," continued Herry.

In the survey, CISA also asked the public about the legal steps taken by Jokowi to respond to accusations against him. As many as 29.60 percent of respondents considered the move quite appropriate, 21.10 percent considered it appropriate, and 6.7 percent considered it very appropriate. However, there are also those who doubt the effectiveness of the move, with 18.5 percent saying it is not right and 15.5 percent saying it is not right.

In my opinion, legal steps are legal and reasonable. All citizens have the same position before the law. And in this context, it is important for Pak Jokowi to restore his image and dignity as head of state," said Herry.

This national survey was held on May 9, 2025, with the target of respondents aged over 17 years or who already have the right to vote. Respondents come from academics, legal experts, researchers, students, NGO activists, to politicians who actively follow legal and political issues.

The survey method uses a purpositive sampling approach through face-to-face interviews via WhatsApp, Zoom, and Google Meet. The total number of respondents who were successfully gathered was 950 people, with a margin of error of buh2.95 percent and a confidence level of 95 percent.
