LAMPUNG BANDAR - Lampung Animal, Fish and Plant Quarantine Center (Karantina) thwarted an attempt to smuggle 668 undocumented birds at Bakauhenui Port, South Lampung.

"On Friday (16/5) during surveillance in Bakauheni, Lampung and Flight Quarantine officers revealed a bus carrying hundreds of wild birds that will be smuggled through Bakauheni Port," said Lampung Quarantine Head Donni Muksydayan in his statement, in Lampung Province, Saturday.

During an inspection of the suspicious bus, he explained that the joint team found several boxes containing birds of various types without any supporting documents.

"When examining the required documents, the driver and the conductor cannot show it. In accordance with Law Number 21 of 2019 concerning Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine, if you are going to cross animals, you must be equipped with a requirement document, such as a veterinary certificate, a domestic plant and animal transport certificate (SATS-DN), and a quarantine certificate," he said.

He said, from the results of the examination, a total of 668 birds were recorded, consisting of 47 birds included in the list of protected animals, and 621 protected birds.

"The protected types of birds are based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 106 of 2018 concerning the Types of Protected Plants and Animals, namely 16 Sumatran leaf cica (kinoy), four small leaf cica (mini weather), two blue wing leaf cica leaves (cuticak branches), four king's sapah honey, 18 serindit melayu, three playongs," he said.

Meanwhile, he continued, birds that were not protected were 200 kebo starlings, 24 mandin Pokray birds, three black pokray birds, three onion platuk birds, 354 pleci birds, 5 pentis birds, one black srigunting bird, 10 honey birds, six siri siri birds, and 15 watery birds.

"Currently, vehicles and all evidence are being held at the Lampung Quarantine Office of the Bakauheni Port Service Unit (Satpel) for further examination and animal identification process," he said.

He said this recurring illegal shipping practice not only threatens the animal population in its natural habitat, but also has the potential to carry diseases between regions that are harmful to animals and humans.

"From the initial information obtained, the birds were transported from the side of the road in the Jambi City area and the plan was to be sent to Rambutan Village, East Jakarta. For this incident, officers also detained those involved in the smuggling attempt," he said.
