JAKARTA - The University of Indonesia is collaborating with the University of California, Berkeley, United States in partnerships in engineering, interdisciplinary research, and future technological innovations that encourage cross-border research.
"We really appreciate the partnership that has been built with UC Berkeley," said UI Chancellor Heri Hermansyah in a statement received by Antara, quoted Monday, May 12.
During a visit to UC Berkeley on May 1, 2025, the UI delegation was received by Deputy Chancellor for Research, Kathy Yelick, Deputy Chancellor for Academic Planning Lisa Alvarez-Cohen, and Dean of the UC Berkeley Faculty of Engineering Prof. Tsu-Jae King Liu, along with UC Berkeley leaders.
In particular, this visit aims to monitor ongoing cooperation activities between the UI Faculty of Engineering and UC Berkeley, entitled the Interdisciplinary Superior Research and Academic Program (PPAUI).
This activity is part of research from three young UI Faculty of Engineering lecturers for one year at UC Berkeley, with the supervision of leading professors from UC Berkeley.
"This visit is part of UI's commitment to continue to encourage technological innovations based on global collaboration in order to answer future challenges," said UI Chancellor Heri Hermansyah.
The Chancellor said this visit was also part of UI's move to expand international networks and strengthen Indonesia's role in the global research and technology ecosystem.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering UI Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan who participated in the visit expressed his appreciation for the support that UC Berkeley continues to provide to UI.
"We believe that the long-term partnership with UC Berkeley will produce innovations and human resources that have a real impact, not only on Indonesia, but also on the world," he said.
During the visit, the UI delegation also had the opportunity to meet directly with three lecturers at the UI Faculty of Engineering who are currently participating in the program.
One of the lecturers currently undergoing the program is Dr Nuraziz Handika from the Department of Civil Engineering and the Environment of the UI Faculty of Engineering.
Aziz said that the research experience with professors and teams from UC Berkeley greatly enriched the scientific perspective.
The collaboration between the UI Faculty of Engineering and UC Berkeley has begun since 2022, has resulted in various academic programs and excellent research.
Currently, the two main programs that are already running are the Pre-Doctoral Program to UC Berkeley and the Visiting Research Program which is being implemented between Faculty of Engineering UC Berkeley and FTUI.

These two programs are fully supported by the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS), the Republic of Indonesia as a form of investment in the development of superior human resources in the field of technology and innovation.
The pre-Doctoral Program aims to select potential doctoral candidates from FTUI who will continue PhD studies at UC Berkeley through initial academic activities, including preliminary research and guidance.
Meanwhile, Visiting Research is a one-year research program in the field related to the Sustainable Development Goals, in this case in the fields of Civil Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Machine Engineering with leading professors from UC Berkeley.
In addition to the two programs above, FTUI has also held a short course program for Berkeley Engineering students in January 2025 and will hold it again in January 2026.
