JAKARTA - The United Nations (OCHA) Humanitarian Affairs Coordination Office said more than 170 children had died since Israel's latest attack on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning.

In a statement on its official website on Wednesday OCHA said the total number of civilians killed as a result of the attack reached more than 400, including more than 170 children and 80 women, quoted from WAFA March 19.

It said rescue teams and paramedics were unable to reach many victims due to a lack of equipment, fuel, and heavy engines.

The office explained that only four field hospitals were fully operational in the area, while 22 hospitals and six field hospitals were partially operational.

A total of 13 hospitals and four other field hospitals have fully suspended operations due to damage and shortages of medical personnel and medicines.

"The situation is very bad, and we have many victims," the office quoted Al-Shifa Hospital Director Mohammed Abu Salmiya as saying.

OCHA warned that more than one million people in the Gaza Strip could face severe food shortages if humanitarian aid deliveries to the area were not continued, adding they were at risk of not receiving food rations in March if shipments to Gaza were not continued.

Stressed, stocks available in the Gaza Strip are running low rapidly, and to address the shortage, UN partners have drastically reduced food aid, stopped the distribution of fresh flour and food, and reduced the number of warm foods in public kitchens.

The office also warned that if the situation continued, at least 80 of the 170 public kitchens on the line would be forced to close within a week or two.
